You don’t want to start a kitchen-remodeling venture without making financial arrangements or at least drawing up a budget plan for the mission first. Perhaps you have even been excited about it for a while now, with the kids jumping all over the place, reminding you of your plans all the time. The time has come for you to sit down and actually draw up a cost statement that will help you prepare for this” this capital expenditure.
If you are going to be kitchen remodeling, you will certainly need a new floor. The old one is cracked and stained, and the harder you scrub, the worse it actually becomes. You will need ceramic or marble tiles that are easier to clean than even the old plastic ones. You may also want to have the heating/cooling system in your kitchen updated or replaced. Changing the air filters may not cost a whole lot, but you may want to write that down too because of the filters do need to be changed monthly, or at least as often as the manufacturer tells you. You do know that the kitchen filters are some of the most overworked in the house.
Adjusting the plumbing of your kitchen is almost a certainty if you are going to remodel the space. You may want the tap and sink in another place, or raised or lowered, as the case may be. The pricing of this subproject may not really be something you can draw up for yourself since you are no professional. However you can have a plumber come in and take a look at it.
That along with the pricing for a new sink should be listed. If you are changing the look of the walls, you are sure to need some ceramic tiles there as well. They don’t cost too much, but you have to take into consideration how many walls you want covered, and how many dozen wall tiles you will have to buy.
That will bring us to the rest of the kitchen walls. They may need a whole new color, something brighter and easier to live with. That either implies a few buckets of paint or some wallpaper; the choice is yours. If you want to go the cheap way, you can settle for a single new coat of the same color; but aren’t you already tired of that? You should put it down on your price list.
The old wooden countertops certainly have to go because they are all soggy by this time, and broken too, from too much moisture. You should be looking to replace them with granite countertops, but if those are too expensive, there are look-alikes with solid surfaces that will also do the job perfectly. You may want to try them out instead.
The electricity and wiring in the kitchen may not need as much work as the plumbing, but it you are going to be moving so many equipment and appliances around, you may as well include a few new electrical fixtures that will help reduce how much you have to move around and help you with the blender, the toaster, fryer, bread maker, and the microwave oven. Your basic kitchen utensils may also need some looking into.
You may want to ditch your old wooden-handled knives and replace them with new ones that have plastic handles. You are better off with cast iron and heavy-duty steel pots and pans or non-stick pans; you do not have to discard the old stainless steel ones, but you may keep them for later use. Your baking and hand-held kitchen apparatus should also be brought up to date, as do your other electrical appliances.
Yes, all of a sudden, you will find that this is a lot to handle and you probably haven’t thought it through too well. Even if you are the do-it-yourself type, you are going to need to hire a few extra hands to help with all of that; plus a couple of professionals that you will need on the retainer. Now you know how much it costs to remodel a kitchen.
